A guide to living in Clapham Common

Another part of the residential success of Clapham, the common really is one of the most sought after locations in London. Green and tranquil, this neighbourhood is regarded as the perfect accompaniment to the action packed surrounding areas.

The common itself stretches across approximately 89 acres and has been designated as parkland since 1878. The green space houses three ponds including two fishing ponds and ‘Cock Pond’, a paddling pool for children. There is also the famed bandstand, right in the centre of the common; it is Grade II listed and the largest bandstand in the capital.

“There are many house shares that are ideal for young professionals looking to get the most for their money, and large Victorian family houses for those aiming to buy.”

Everyday shopping can be successfully carried out on the bustling Clapham High Street, whilst each Sunday, London Artisans’ Market runs from Bonneville Primary School, offering local produce aplenty. Alternatively, Venn Street Market is the newest in the area, with a selection of gluten-free and health food products.

Whilst there are some spectacular Queen Anne and Georgian properties around the edges of the common, most of the local property is Victorian, although this is not to be sniffed at. There are many houseshares that are ideal for young professionals looking to get the most for their money, and large Victorian family houses for those aiming to buy.

Many residents known as ‘Clappers’, move to Clapham Common initially to rent and then and end up staying to buy property, this acts as sufficient evidence to sum up the popularity of an area so synonymous with South London charm.
